A Wild Delight

[…] Following a brief introduction by the conductor, Debussy’s Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune in Maurice Ravel’s arrangement for piano four hands followed the orchestral version. And indeed, the pianists Hanna Bachmann and Laurah Kasemann succeeded in conjuring that uniquely impressionistic atmosphere through their refined touch and sophisticated dynamic shading. Remarkably, the orchestral colors were not missed; the sound world created by the two pianists immediately captivated the audience.
With the next piece, Ravel’s Pavane pour une infante défunte, the approach was reversed: first a version for two pianos, followed by Ravel’s orchestral score. The Pavane is likewise a key work of French Impressionism, and here too, both interpretations left nothing to be desired.
